Massage Therapy Session

What is
Abdominal Therapy?

Or you may have heard it referred to as Mayan abdominal massage, abdominal massage, Mayan massage, or some other combination. So let's talk about what it actually is and why it's called a therapy as opposed to just massage.

Abdominal Therapy

Abdominal Therapy as it's known today was developed by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, a doctor of Naprapathy who studied under Don Elijio Panti and Miss Hortense Robinson, learning about traditional bush medicine in Belize. This incorporated a study of herbs and plants to create medicine, abdominal therapy techniques, as well as learning about the Mayan spirits and spiritual practices.

So what does it do?

As noted on the ATC website "Abdominal therapy techniques address the position and health of pelvic and abdominal organs to improve function of reproduction and digestion." Abdominal therapy addresses the whole core of the body - from ribs to pubic bone and low back to tailbone - utilizing massage techniques to improve the flow of nerves, arteries, veins, energy, and lymph. With roots in Central American practices, it works to treat not only the physical body but the energetic and spiritual bodies as well.

What can it help with?

A whole host of things! Significant improvement in menstrual cycles - reduced pain, more regular periods, less bloating and PMS symptoms has been observed with consistent treatments and self care practices. Abdominal therapy can also help with fertility issues, prolapse, constipation, digestive issues, incontinence, post-surgery healing, and overall digestive and reproductive health. It can also support stress and anxiety relief, similar to a typical massage.

Who can benefit?

Anyone and everyone can benefit from abdominal therapy. However, people who tend to benefit the most from it are those dealing with menstrual or digestive issues. Any age, gender, lifestage, lifestyle can benefit.

What to expect at your first session?

Each initial treatment begins by going over your intake form and health history - this process tends to be more in depth than a traditional massage intake due to the nature of the area we are working on. There's often a lot of mental and emotional charge to the abdominal region in addition to any physical issues that may occur. After the intake, Erin will begin the session typically on the front of the abdomen (belly region). You will then be led through instruction for a self massage practice (or YAM) before turning over to work on the back side of the body. You'll receive a follow up email with the YAM instructions in case you don't remember them once you leave.

How long does it take to see a difference?

That depends on what we're treating and the consistency of the YAM practice, but typically three months is a good marker to see some sort of change. For that reason, I offer a package that includes an initial session plus three follow ups so that you can take care of scheduling all of your sessions right away.
